What is Shaken Baby Syndrome?

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) is a term that describes the serious injuries that can occur when an infant or toddler is severely and violently shaken, often due to excessive crying.  It occurs most often in infants from 2-8 months of age, although it can be seen in older children.  SBS can lead to brain damage, retinal hemorrhages, blindness, hearing loss, broken bones, paralysis, development delays, and even death.

7 tips on how to soothe a crying baby

First, check to see if your baby is sick, hungry, or needs to be burped and/or changed.  If none of those are the cause, then try the below tips…

  • Move around. Babies tend to enjoy motion.  Put your bundle of joy in a stroller and go for a walk or dance slowly around the room.
  • Turn on some soft music (any kind), or sing and hum.
  • Pamper your baby by giving them a gentle massage.
  • Offer your baby something to suck on, such as a pacifier.
  • Run a warm bath for your baby to soak in.
  • It’s ok to let the baby cry. Put the baby in a safe place and take a break for a few minutes.
  • Understand that none of this may help, so keep the number of a close friend or loved one who can provide you with advice or support.  24 hour hot-lines are also convenient.
